Ready for the rain in Spain? We’re heading to Galicia! (#WorldWineTravel)

2021 is the year of Spain for the World Wine Travel (#WorldWineTravel) group of globe-hopping wine and food bloggers. Last month we visited the high plains of north-central Spain where hot, dry summer heat bakes the grapevines and winters can be brutally cold.

Say adios to this climate. You’ll need a raincoat and galoshes for our next stop.

We’re heading to Galicia, otherwise known as “Green Spain.” Located on the moist Atlantic Ocean coast, Galicia stays wet and cool much of the year. Lush-green rolling hills look more like Ireland than the rest of Spain.

Grapevines were originally planted here more than 2,000 years ago by the Romans and helped along by 12th-century monks. Wines from this region are generally light, aromatic and acid-driven white varieties. Albariño is the most classic and popular example.

For detailed descriptions of Galicia’s five wine regions, I strongly recommend VinePair’s definitive guide.

You’re invited to join the World Wine Travel bloggers Saturday, April 24, at 8 am PT/11 am ET, for a live Twitter chat about this corner of Spain. No need to have published a post – an interest in learning and sharing will suffice. Simply follow the #WorldWineTravel hashtag.

A total of 18 #WorldWineTravel bloggers are sharing their thoughts and recipes this month. A dozen or so of the bloggers recently “returned” from a virtual trip to the Rías Baixas region of Galicia with our sponsor, Gregory+Vine. We heard from winery reps and winemakers, and got to taste a few samples of Albariño, too.
