Wine for the day after the big day

Ok, friends. Thanksgiving is upon us. By now, the menu is decided, and possibly some of the dishes are simmering on the stove or baking in the oven. The nearest wine store is closed or closing soon.

So let’s talk about the morning after, and the afternoon, and the evening. Black Friday. Now there’s a day when you could use a glass or two of wine.

drink-breakfast-orange-juiceI suggest starting your wine consumption early – especially if you’re up before dawn to do battle for that must-have striped iPad case or fur-collared sweater. Start your day with a mimosa, a simple yet luscious blend of sparkling wine and orange juice. Prosecco is my go-to sparkling wine. It’s fruity, light and easy on the wallet. Have a sink full of holiday pots and pans needing your attention? I guarantee a carafe of mimosa is going to make that job a lot easier.

Lunchtime already? How about a turkey and cranberry sandwich on flatbread with a few spinach leaves tucked inside and a schmear of pesto? Mmmmmm. Almost better than Thanksgiving. Time to pop the cork on an oaked Chardonnay or a light-bodied Italian red, such as a Valtellina or Valpolicella. (If buying Valpolicella, look for the higher quality DOCG on the label.)  A Chinon (made from Cabernet Franc) from the Loire Valley of France would complement this meal, too.

Next, take a nap. Turn on your favorite music or mindless TV program if you’re having trouble with this. Better yet, grab a glass of sherry. Pretend to be your grandmother.

Those leftover string bean and butternut squash casseroles are waiting to be reheated. Some of you are saying “ughhh” right about now, while others can’t wait to dig into the leftovers. Here’s my advice: Order yourself some barbecued wings to go with these sides, add a shake of red pepper to everything, and serve up the entire spicy smorgasbord with an off-dry Riesling to temper the heat.

If you’re lucky enough to still have pie hanging around, get yourself a steaming-hot cup of chai tea or hand-roasted and brewed coffee to go with it. Enough with the wine already.

Happy Thanksgiving (and the day after)!
